Insight Workshop

In 2011 we were involved in a fascinating workshop with 3 other river management organisations from the Motueka River in New Zealand, the Fraser River in Canada and the Aberdeenshire Dee. This week long event, facilitated by Dundee and St Andrews University and funded/hosted by the Scottish Universities Insight Institute, aimed to explore the evolution and governance structures of these organisations and discuss experiences of what has and hasn’t worked in terms of grassroots, stakeholder-led management of water resources. Despite the very different structures and scale of the catchments (e.g. the Fraser basin is larger than Scotland), there were many common issues and it was very valuable to share experience of addressing these.

Outputs from the workshop
Gatekeepers of participation: Water management at the interface of government and society  (Policy Brief, Apr 2012)
Participatory Catchment Organisations: cases from Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and the Scottish–English Borderlands. Geographical Journal, 179(3), 234-247. (Academic paper, Sep 2013)
